System of a Down

System of a Down is a Los Angeles based band formed in the mid-90s. All four members are of Armenian heritage. Their music has been classified as nu-metal, heavy metal, alternative and prog-rock, amongst others, but the band shies away from being pigeon-holed. And rightly so, as they have a broad range of styles covering all of the above and more. At times the vocals of Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian are maniacal, at times they are powerful, and at times they combine sweetly in harmony and melody. The music is characterized by precision timing and often fairly simple guitar riffs, but there are plenty of more intricate motifs too. The sludge can at any moment give way to something that sounds almost like folk music, or burst into an inspired pop chorus - with System of a Down you just can't tell what's coming next!

After experiencing a certain degree of success with their self-titled debut album, System of a Down had their big break with their second album, Toxicity, released the year of the September 11th terrorist attacks and fuelled with controversial political content. They then released Steal This Album, a record containing songs that never made the final cut on the first two albums. This was followed by Mezmerize and Hypnotize in 2005 (both albums recorded in 2004).
