Pink Floyd
Originally a psychedelic 60s band from Cambridge, led by the charismatic-but-soon-to-lose-it Syd Barret, Pink Floyd then took on guitarist David Gilmour and went on to become one of the most renowned progressive rock acts of the 70s. Somewhat technological in their approach compared to many other bands of the time, Pink Floyd used recorded samples and tape effects on their records during this era. Their best work is often considered to be 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, which dealt with the issues of death and madness, presumably in reference to Syd Barret. Another masterpiece is 1979's The Wall, singer/bassist Roger Water's autobiographical opera, which covers any and all aspects of his life from women to politics. Recent years have seen musical and personal differences alienate Waters from the other members of the group. For those of you wanting to listen to Pink Floyd for the first time and not sure where to start, Echoes (2001) is an excellent 2 CD compilation containing the best of the band's career.
Pink Floyd recently reunited to perform a set at the Live 8 concert held at Hyde Park, London. The performance boosted their record sales, but David Gilmour has announced that he will donate all royalties received as a result of the concert to charity.
