Machine Head

Formed in 1992, Oakland, California, Machine Head would become one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 90s. Signed to Roadrunner Records, they released the now classic Burn My Eyes in 1994, which includes the equally classic album opener, "Davidian". Robb Flynn, the band's charismatic frontman, blew listeners away with his intense growl coupled with his melodic singing.

Machine Head released The More Things Change in 1997, an album that musically continued where the previous one left off, albeit not performing as well. However, 1999's The Burning Red took a new direction and incorporated rapping alongside the expected heaviness (typical of the nu-metal genre), a move which displeased some fans and led to accusations of selling out. 2001's Supercharger also met some criticism (though heavier than The Burning Red it was considered to be the band's weakest album) and was further hampered in its success due to being released soon after the 9/11 attacks in the US.

In 2003 Machine Head released a live album, Hellalive, recorded at a packed-out Brixton Academy in London. Later that year, Machine Head returned to their original formula on their fifth studio album, Through the Ashes of Empires, which was closer in style to Burn My Eyes. The album sold well, and having previously terminated their contract with Roadrunner Records in the US, Machine Head were quickly offered a new one to capitalize on the success of the album in Europe.

The band released its first DVD, Elegies, in 2005. The DVD contains live concert footage, music videos and a candid documentary about the band.

Robb Flynn was one of four captains on the recent special album commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Roadrunner Records, Roadrunner United: The All-Star Sessions. Trivia: He has had an ongoing feud with Slayer guitarist Kerry King, one of the most vocal critics of the The Burning Red, which he claims he has tried to remedy.
